David Beckham yesterday thanked thousands of our readers who responded so generously to his heartfelt appeal in the Daily Mirror on behalf of the starving kids in Africa.

The soccer star’s plea moved you to send thousands of pounds in what has been described by UNICEF chiefs as a “phenomenal” reaction to their Somalia and East Africa emergency appeal.

A spokesman for Beckham said: “David is delighted by the response and wants to thank Mirror readers for helping the appeal.”

Incredibly, the number of people sending text messages pledging £5 to help seven-month-old baby Mihag Gedi Farah and thousands like him increased by 300% in just one day.

Yesterday Mihag’s mother Asiah Dagane, who fled to Kenya from Somalia with her son after the family’s cattle died, spoke of her suffering, saying: “In my mind, I’m not well. My baby is sick. In my head, I am also sick.”

Mihag’s nurse, speaking from a Kenyan refugee camp, described him as “severely, severely malnourished”. He weighs just seven pounds.

She added: “We never tell the mother, of course, that their baby might not make it. We try to give them hope.”

Writing in yesterday’s Daily Mirror, Beckham, 36, said: “Almost two million children in Somalia alone have been going to bed hungry for many, many weeks. Children are literally dying of hunger. And many more will die in the coming weeks unless you and I do something to help.” More than 200 online readers recommended Beckham’s letter on Facebook, and another 140 posted it on Twitter.

A UNICEF spokesman said: “The response has been quite literally phenomenal. We became aware early on in the morning that thousands of Daily Mirror readers were responding almost immediately after reading David’s letter. We cannot thank them enough for their generosity.”
